Guthrie was born in 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee. She attended Hutchison, a private girls’ school, and studied art at the Memphis Academy of Art, which is now the Memphis College of Art. Her studies were put on hold for a few years when she moved to New York City to seek her fortune. No fortune ensued, but she did study sculpture and work in stone for the first time. She returned to Memphis and in 1968 married Jim Killebrew, a young surgical intern. They moved to Nashville, Tennessee and had two sons before setting off to Fort Rucker, Alabama in 1973 to fulfill their army obligation. In 1975, they moved to LaGrange. When her sons were old enough to be embarrassed by their parents, Guthrie returned to school and got a BA with an art major at LaGrange College. She continued to take various art classes there until 1998, when she became one of the founding partners of Artists in Residence. Her work is in private collections throughout the Southeast and was honored with Best in Show at the LaGrange Artists Guild Exhibition in 2000.
“Being a sculptor first and a painter second, chiaroscuro is apparent in all but my most recent paintings. Working in two dimensions instead of three I use both line and color to create tension on the surface. My recent travel to the Tuscany region of Italy and the Provence region of France has been an inspiration to me. I have fallen in love with the brilliant Provencal light that seems to make the colors of the region even more exciting. In my current paintings I strive to pull away the layers of unnecessary detail to reveal the essence of the subject.”
